Ordering frozen meat: weights, yields, gifts and what to do if something is wrong

Short answer: Cuts of meat are never identical, so weights and counts vary, and frozen meat has to be received and checked promptly. These answers explain yields, gifts and what to do if a package is wrong, missing or damaged.

What is the difference between hanging weight and packaged weight?

Hanging weight is the carcass weight after slaughter and initial dressing. Packaged weight is the trimmed, cut and wrapped meat you take home. Bones, fat, moisture loss and cutting choices make packaged weight lower.

Why is packaged meat weight lower than live or hanging weight?

Processing removes hide, head, blood, internal organs and other material; cutting removes or separates bone and fat, and aging can reduce moisture. That is normal yield loss, not missing meat.

How do I choose the right amount of meat for my family?

Start with how many meat meals you cook each week, the portions your household actually eats and the freezer space you have. A smaller box you will use is a better value than a share that does not fit your habits.

Can frozen meat be given as a gift?

Yes, but arrange delivery for a day someone can receive it and make sure freezer space is ready. Tell the recipient a perishable package is coming and have them check it promptly.

Is a gift card easier than shipping frozen meat as a surprise?

Often, yes. A gift card lets the recipient choose products, delivery timing and freezer space. A shipped box is better when you know someone will be home and you know what they enjoy.

Why is a farm meat product sometimes sold out?

Each animal yields a limited number of specialty cuts, and processing happens in batches. A sold-out item may reflect honest whole-animal inventory rather than a permanent discontinuation.

Why does farm meat inventory change with the season?

Animal growth, pasture conditions, processor schedules and demand all affect availability. Farms can reduce confusion by posting expected restock windows and offering practical substitutes.

What should I do if I receive the wrong product?

Photograph the shipping label, box contents and individual product labels, keep the food safely cold, and contact the seller promptly with the order number. Do not discard the packaging until the seller responds.

What should I do if a package is missing from my order?

Compare the contents with the packing list, check all insulation and contact the seller with the order number and a photo of everything received. That gives the farm the information needed to trace and correct the order.

What should I do if a vacuum seal is damaged on arrival?

Photograph the damage before moving the product. Check whether the meat is frozen, has ice crystals or is below 40°F, keep it contained, and contact the seller promptly. Do not eat meat that arrived above 40°F.

Why can vacuum-packed meat have an odor when first opened?

Vacuum packaging can trap normal odors that fade after the meat is exposed to air. An odor that remains strong, sour or putrid—especially with slime, swelling or uncertain temperature history—is a reason not to use it.

What information should I send with a quality complaint?

Send the order number, product name, package and establishment codes, freeze or thaw dates, preparation method, photos and a plain description of the smell, flavor or texture. Keep the label because it is the traceability key.
